Welsh Icon Poems for St David’s Day 2026

We celebrated the Richard Burton exhibition at Narberth Museum by inviting poets to send Great Welsh Icon poems over for a competition, and we were delighted by the response. We had a jolly evening hearing the poems and result of the competition, live at Chapter One.

Thanks to all of you contributors for your talent and generosity, and for your patience in waiting for your poems to be put up in this gallery.

This was a collaboration with Poetry Pause podcast, now coming to you from the old book room, here at Chapter One.

Poet Mark Lewis judged, and the winner was Christian Donovan, with her poem:
I, Iolo Morganwg – wordsmith, con artist.

Mark said: ‘ This poem reads wonderfully, has strong imagery, internal rhythm, excellent use of language and alliteration and matching consonantal sounds and takes an interesting and different topic in the theme of Welsh legends’.

Big congrats to Christian.
